In a statement, Kampala Metropolitan spokesperson Rachael Kawala said the suspects ordered the victims to stop and lie down at gunpoint, a command they complied with under threat of violence.

“The robbers proceeded to rob the businessman of his mobile phone and wallet at gunpoint. As they turned to demand the woman’s phone, police officers who were conducting motorcycle patrols in the area arrived at the scene,” the statement said.

Police say the sudden arrival of patrol officers disrupted the robbery, forcing the suspects to flee the scene.

During their escape, they reportedly abandoned a bag containing suspected stolen items and a rifle believed to have been used in the attack.

Officers pursued the fleeing suspects, and one male suspect, estimated to be about 25 years old and yet to be identified, was fatally wounded during the operation.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns over armed street robberies in parts of Kampala, where pedestrians and motorists have increasingly been targeted during late-night and early-morning hours, prompting intensified patrols and rapid response operations by security agencies.
